|BAKERSFIELD — For the third time in its illustrious history, Ponderosa High wrestling crowned a state champion.
Bruin senior Zack Velasquez (152-pounds) capped off an undefeated season Saturday with a state title at the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships, as he outlasted Justin Thomas of Santiago (Corona) in a 2-1 double-overtime decision on Saturday. And Velasquez did it in nail-chewing, teeth-grinding fashion, and he did it with lots of boos from the crowd.
It wasn’t that the patrons at Rabobank Arena had anything against Velasquez, the state’s top-ranked wrestler who moved to 55-0 this season. It was that his matches aroused controversy.
In a match that managed to be extremely eventful despite being extremely uneventful, neither wrestler showed any interest in creating offense. As a result, stalling warnings were given to each wrestler in the second period, the second scoreless one in a row.
